WU RE-DO SOCIAL MEDIA EVENT
Winthrop’s Office of Sustainability puts more emphasis on recycling than any other aspect of waste management. However, one of the trendiest methods of reducing waste is reusing and repurposing items rather than just recycling them. In Spring 2016 the Office of Sustainability could launch a social media campaign to draw more attention to and participation in upcycling and repurposing. This event will be called “WU Re-do.”
“WU Re-do” will have pages on Facebook and Twitter for promotion, but will ultimately be a Pinterest campaign. The campaign will have its own Pinterest account to post daily upcycling ideas and project instructions on Pinterest using common items students would otherwise throw away or recycle. These ideas could be craft ideas generated by the office, or ideas already on Pinterest that the office would repin. To gain followers, the campaign page would follow other Winthrop sponsored boards and Winthrop students such as the Courtyard’s account.
The Pinterest activity will be shared on Facebook and Twitter on the Sustainability Initiatives account with the hashtag #WUredo. In addition, the coordinators of the campaign can post blurbs and tweets on Facebook and Twitter encouraging students to share pictures of their own upcycling projects on Facebook and Twitter for the chance to win gift card prizes, using the hashtag and tagging the Sustainability Initiatives account. The campaign will feature a weekly student project picture, to be selected based on the number of likes and shares that the student project pictures receive. The student will win the title of WU-Over of the Week along with Plato’s Closet and Hobby Lobby gift cards to encourage further repurposing and upcycling.
To summarize, the “WU Re-do” social media event would include:
Creating a Pinterest account run by the Office of Sustainability to pin upcycling crafts and ideas
Gaining followers by following Winthrop-related boards, accounts, and students
Sharing the Pinterest activity on Facebook
Utilizing the hashtag #WUredo for all posts
Encouraging students to share pictures of their own upcycling projects on Facebook and Twitter with the #WUredo and tagging the Sustainability Initiatives account
Featuring weekly student project pictures with a prize for the student who are featured
Promoting the contest and prizes by posting on Facebook and Twitter

Upcycling benefits more than the environment
Winthrop’s Office of Sustainability wants students to get crafty! The WU Re-do event in Spring 2016 will benefit the environment and students through upcycling. Now you have even more reasons to participate in the movement.
Upcycling means taking objects that would otherwise be thrown away and giving them new life by turning them into something useful again. This reduces waste in the landfills, but also has a number of other benefits as well, according to Business 2 Community, an open online community where business professionals discuss current business trends and news. Students will be happy to learn that the environment isn’t the only thing benefitting from the upcycling trend.
Business 2 Community’s 5 Benefits of Upcycling:
It’s good for the environment. The more junk you repurpose, the less junk there is in the landfills.
You can make money from trash. Ever heard of Etsy? You can sell your creative crafts online or at campus art shows.
Upcycling boosts your creativity. Maybe you can finish that Art History paper now.
You get to keep objects you like. That wine bottle from your 21st birthday that you just can’t bring yourself to throw away? Turn it into something useful instead!
You get to be your own boss. You follow directions all day. Take time to be yourself and do your own thing through upcycling.
